The perfect two weeks Mexico Itinerary – See everything you need to see in just two weeks
Mexico is not like any other place on the earth, it is full of culture, passion, amazing people and food as well as beautiful nature, something that feels out of the world. If I can recommend you one place to visit, it will always be Mexico. I am a person that gets bored easily, and doesn’t need to visit a place twice, but when it comes to Mexico, I could visit Mexico anytime. The only problem with Mexico is, it is so huge, so you either have to stay in Mexico for a very long time, you have to go many times to see all the places you want to see. A well-planned Mexico itinerary is key to making the most of your visit.
Another annoying thing is,
all the MUST visit places are really MUST visit places, meaning you CAN’T even skip one place. They are all beyond worth seeing, so you REALLY can’t miss out on any of the places. What do you, when you HAVE to see everything, but you don’t have enough time? The time is not the problem, you just need someone who has been to Mexico many times and knows how to get around in Mexico. That person would be me, and this Mexico itinerary will ensure you can see everything you need in just two weeks.
The first time I went to Mexico, I saw a lot of places, but I also didn’t see a lot of places I wanted to see, so I get it. Now that I have been to Mexico three times, and the third time being the most successful, I can give you my full Mexico itinerary. This ultimate Mexico itinerary will make sure you see all the places you want without needing more time.
This third time was super successful,
even my very virgo friend that was with, didn’t mind the unplanned and going with the flow type of the trip. This trip did have hiccup, but even with the hiccup, that we call hurricane, we still managed to see most of THE MUST visit places in this part of Mexico. This Mexico itinerary includes Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Isla Mujeres, Cozumel, Merida, and Chichen Itza. So, without further ado, let’s jump straight to the Mexico itinerary.
Day 1: Arrival
I suggest when you arrive to take it easy, since you might be tired from traveling, you also might arrive afternoon/evening so you can’t really do too much. We landed around 6 pm, and arrived at hotel at around 9 pm. From landing to getting your luggage and getting to the hotel it take some time. That night we ended up going to downtown and just had some dinner then went back to the hotel, because we need a good rest for the following day. On the first day, maybe have a laid back lunch/dinner or chill at the beach.
Day 2: Isla Mujeres + Coco Bongo
We woke up bright and early and went straight to Delfines Beach to enjoy early morning at this beautiful beach. Delfines Beach is a MUST see when you visit Cancun, it is such a beautiful beach. After that we went to Marakana cafe for breakfast, which I highly recommend. It is buffet style breakfast, that has a much options and is very affordable. The cafe is also super cute and very instagrammable, so you can also take view photos for instagram while you are there. When we were done with breakfast, we headed to “El Embarcadero Cancun-Isla Mujeres” where we got ferry tickets for Isla Mujeres and then made our way to Isla Mujeres. If you want to visit Isla Mujeres, it is the best to stay in Cancun since Isla Mujeres is the closest from Cancun.
You can also book a tour to Isla Mujeres,
I suggest booking online because the offers are way better, and DON’T NOT book any tours on the Island, they are way too expensive and tours are not even that good. When we arrived at Isla Mujeres, the first thing we did was, we went to Isla Mujeres downtown beach.
At that time it
was already getting super hot, so we needed to get into the water to fresh up. We stayed at the beach for a while and then afterwards, we ended up booking a snorkelling tour, which was super expensive and so not worth it. You can totally book a tour, but do it online, for example on viator or getyourguide. We finished our day at Isla Mujeres by having beautiful dinner at beachfront restaurant, it was such an amazing experience. We were watching sunset while drinking some cocktails. Then we head back to Cancun, because we had to quickly get ready to go to Coco Bongo.
We bought a standard tickets
with five drinks at the club and they were 70 $ per person, the week prior to that I was checking online and the same tickets were slightly more expensive so make sure to check prices online as well as in person. The reason we went to Coco Bongo is because everyone had told me that Coco Bong is a MUST, and that it is the most amazing show and definitely worth seeing. Well after seeing the show I can confidently say, this is far from the truth. The show was true disappointment and definitely NOT worth seeing. I suggest you better go out in downtown, where Coco Bongo is also located, but just skip Coco Bongo. I personally think spending 70$ at some nice bars/clubs in downtown would give you better experience.
Day 3: Shopping
On the following day, the weather was little bit gloomy so we decided to spend the day shopping. If you anything like me, then you need to go shopping in Cancun. It is honestly such a good place to shop. We ended up going to two shopping malls, and they have more than enough for you to do all of the shopping. First we went “Plaza Las Americas” which is such huge mall and really has everything you need. Afterwards we went “La Isla” which is basically shopping village, the whole village is very aesthetically pleasing with whole being covered by beautiful colorful buildings. It has luxury and regular stores, as well as restaurants, so it super practical. You can do your shopping and grab something to eat.
Day 4: Play del Carmen
On the fourth day we rented a car to go to Playa del Carmen, because we wanted to visit Playa del Carmen as well as some places there are closer from Play del Carmen. We rented the car from America Car Rental , but if you don’t want to rent the car you can always go by bus which are in great conditions and function pretty well. I do recommend car, because it is much faster and easier to get around. Anyways after arriving in Playa del Carmen we check into the hotel, which we booked super last minute, since we didn’t really have any plans and decided to stay in Playa last minute.
Knowing this now,
I suggest you book something little bit more in advanced, I am sure it will be way cheaper. From driving to Playa to checking into the hotel by the time we were done, it was already evening and that evening we had plans with our friends from Playa to go out, so we got ready to go out. Playa del Carmen is definitely perfect place to go out, I would even dare to say it is better than Cancun.
Before we met our friends
we went go eat Ilios, which is basically restaurant that belongs to Grupo Anderson’s that owes many fancy restaurants in Mexico. I highly recommend eating at one of their restaurants and then you go there. When you arrive at one of their restaurants they will ask if any of you have birthday, do yourself a favor and pretend to have a birthday or that someone in your group has a birthday, trust me you will get the most iconic experience.
After we were done eating the most amazing dinner,
we met up with our friends and went to view bars and clubs. In the main street of Playa there are many restaurants, bars and clubs, you can check out and see which one you like the most. Some of the clubs/bar I enjoyed in Playa are: Mandala , Clandestino , La Vaquita and The Roof Bar. Playa del Carmen has great nightlife so it is definitely worth checking it out.
Day 5: Tulum
When you visit Mexico one place you can’t miss is Tulum. Since we rented the car we drove from Playa to Tulum and I was surprised how quick and easy the drive was. Straightaway we headed to the beach and had coffee at beautiful Taboo beach club. What I really love about Tulum is that you can only enter the beach through beach clubs, which makes the beach less crowded, most of the times it is actually pretty empty.
It is annoying that they force
you to pay for the food and drink so you can enter the beach, especially that prices in Tulum are super high, but it is worth it because you basically have beach to yourself. If you really don’t want to spending money on overpriced food and drink, you can easily enter the beach through hotels that have access to the beach, most of the hotels will allow you to enter the beach without paying anything.
Afterwards we walked
around little bit, and found another cute beach club where we had some food. After eating we went to the beach, and enjoyed sometime at the beach, it was so nice because we were basically the only ones at the beach. Another thing you could do in Tulum is to walk around, because there are so many cute instagrammable spots in Tulum that you can take advantage of. We spent sometime at the beach and then headed back to Playa, where we finished off the night with some nice dinner.
Day 6: Valladolid
The next we were ready to head to Merida, because actually we were going to our friend’s wedding. The reason we went to Mexico, was for our friend’s wedding, which was held in Merida. From Playa del Carmen to Merida it is roughly around 3 hours, I recommend choosing the highway route because it is much safer. If you choose to drive the highway route, you will have to pay the toll twice, so make sure you have cash with you.
After driving for two hours,
we stopped in beautiful little Mexican town called Valladolid to have a break and get some food. This town is so small, you can see the entire town in just ten minutes and it is so worth seeing it. If you are driving from Playa del Carmen to Merida, stopping by in Valladolid is the way to do it. Afterwards we drove for sometime and then finally arrived in Merida, where we finished off the day with some dinner.
Day 7: Merida
We started off the day with beautiful breakfast at Casa Maya, that is such a great restaurant not only the food was amazing, but also the restaurant itself. After the breakfast we headed to Progreso beach, where our friend has her bachelorette party. Progreso is located thirty minutes away from Merida, and the drive to the beach was super nice. At the beach we had a picnic with pizza and some drinks, but it was such a great way to spend the day at the beach.
You could order some
food and drinks and then do picnic at the beach. We spent sometime at the beach and then headed to the hotel to get ready for part two of our friend’s bachelorette party. In the evening we had a nice dinner, then went to super cute bar and ended up the night at Classico peninsula club, which was such an awful place and we had the worst experience there. I would highly advice you against going to this club unless you want to support racist and homophobic people.
Day 8: Celestún
On the following day we had our friend’s wedding, so obviously we did that. Since most of you are probably not going to Mexico for the wedding I suggest you visit Celestún. If you are nature lover and want to connect with nature this is then perfect place for you. Celestún is a beautiful biosphere reserve with beaches, mangrove forests, flamingos and many other wildlife. Here a tour I found that you might want to check out here
Day 9: Culture day
Merida has such a rich history, especially regarding Mayan culture, so the city offers variety museums, that will give you insight into their rich culture and history. Most of the museums are in the center, which makes it easier for you to see more museums, plus some museums are even free. Here are official websites for Merida, where you can find upcoming events and things to do in Merida: Visit Mérida MX and Turismo Mérida
Here are all free museums:
Here are some other museums you might want to see:
Anthropology and History Museum
Day 10: Chichén Itzá, Cenote Ik Kil and Izmal
On this day our friend booked the bus for the whole day, and the plan was to go to Chichén Itzá, Cenote Ik Kil and Izmal, but our dear friend Hurricane Milton destroyed this plan. We managed to see Chichén Itzá, where we had tour guide that told us all about rich history of Chichén Itzá and Mayas. Pro tip if you want to get a TRUE Chichén Itzá experience, don’t book a tour, but only get tour guide there. I have done Chichén Itzá tour in the past, and with the tour you don’t get a lot of time to see everything.
After Chichén Itzá
the plan was to go to Cenote Ik Kil, but because of hurricane we went to cenote that was closer from Chichén Itzá. We stayed there for a bit and in hurry headed back to Merida to prepare for hurricane. Most likely this won’t happen to you, you I suggest after Chichén Itzá going to Cenote Ik Kil. I have been there before and it is true so magical there. When you head back to Merida you can do quick stop in Izmal.
Day 11: Uxmal & Kabah
The day after hurricane, the day was super slow and chill for us. It was kind of weird, in the morning it was so hard to even find a place where we can eat, and then in the evening the restaurants were not able to server everything on the menu. I suggest doing Uxmal & Kabah tour , where you can learn even more about Mayan history.
Day 12: Street food walking tour
The best way to finish off your trip in Merida is by doing street food walking tour. You will get a chance to try out the amazing local food of Merida. This is the tour you might want to check out here
Day 13: Merida to Playa del Carmen
We were supposed to stay in Merida for one more day, but spontaneously decided to go to Playa del Carmen so we can visit Cozumel. We actually had booked a hotel in Cancun, but decided to rebook it for later date and found a hotel very last minute. By the time we arrived in Playa del Carmen and checked into the hotel it was already afternoon. We decided to spend the rest of the day at the beach, and it was super nice. The beach there is very nice and super lively, a lot of people and music. We ended off the night by going out for a bit.
Day 14: Cozumel
We woke up bright and early and headed to Cozumel. There are I believe three companies that have ferries from Playa to Cozumel, but I think the one that we went with was less crowded you can check it out here. Cozumel is a remote island so that means you will need to rent a car or a scooter, because otherwise you won’t be able to get around in Cozumel.
We rented a jeep
for really affordable price and got really nice jeep. We rented the jeep at HTL Rentals, I highly recommend them because anywhere else it will be more expensive. Cozumel is a beautiful island that has many beautiful beach clubs, where you can enjoy your day. We went to one of the beach clubs, where we were able to do some water sports. Afterwards we drove little bit with the jeep and took some nice photos with it. Finally we finished off this incredible trip with an epic nighout.
While two weeks in Mexico is definitely not enough, this Mexico itinerary will make sure you see everything you need to see and will make you feel like you have been in Mexico for much longer time. From chill days to adventurous days, this itinerary has little bit of everything. Hopefully I can guide you to have the best time in Mexico. Let me know, what you think about this epic Mexico itinerary. Wish you the best time in Mexico.
