Healthy, luscious, shiny, full—these are the hair goals we all strive to achieve. We subject our strands to hot tools, countless products and both professional and at-home treatments to give it life and radiance. We’ve tried everything from glosses that promise glass-like shine to masks that promise to restore and renew. But hair Botox? Now, that’s a new one. As its name suggests, hair Botox offers a complete restoration for your locks. It fills in, plumps and promises to make your hair smooth and shiny. The treatment has gained popularity for its noteworthy results, but what exactly is hair Botox and how does it work? We tapped two experts to help break it down ahead.

What Is Hair Botox?

“Hair Botox refers to a deep conditioning treatment that helps to repair hair damage by filling in the gaps in the hair fibers,” says Dr. Ramtin Kassir, triple board-certified facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon and founder of Kassir Plastic Surgery. Much like a specialized facial, it’s designed to revitalize and target issues such as frizz and dryness. Dr. Kassir explains that hair Botox is often used to enhance the natural hair’s texture by smoothing the strands and adding shine.

So what exactly goes into a hair Botox treatment? According to Tara Adashev, head nurse at Neinstein Plastic Surgery in New York, the treatment is composed of proteins, amino acids, vitamins and keratin. She explains that the mixture coats the hair fibers, repairs them from the inside out, and improves strength.

How Long Does Hair Botox Last?

Longevity is one of the big benefits of a hair Botox treatment. Unlike a deep conditioner, the effects of hair Botox are meant to last. Adashev shares that the treatment typically lasts between two and four months, depending on your hair type. “The quality of the treatment and your hair care routine will also play a factor in how long your hair Botox lasts,” she says. The pro recommends using sulfate-free shampoos and avoiding frequent washing to extend the life of your treatment.

How Much Does Hair Botox Cost?

Like any beauty service, the cost of hair Botox depends on factors such as location and the experience of your stylist. That said, both experts note that the service usually ranges from $100 to $500. Of course, there are other factors that can increase the cost, such as hair length and thickness. Adashev adds that the price can go as high as $1,000 if the appointment includes additional services like a full salon experience.

How To Maintain Hair Botox

If you’ve ever dyed your hair before, you know that resuming your wash routine the next day is not ideal. “It is generally recommended to wait 2-3 days before washing your hair to allow the treatment to fully absorb,” says Dr. Kassir. With a treatment like this, you need to allow the ingredients to penetrate beneath the outer layer to ensure the best possible results.

How Often Should You Do Hair Botox?

According to the experts, hair Botox treatments can be done every three to four months. In short, it’s a good idea to give your hair a breather. “Overdoing the treatment can lead to product buildup or diminished results, so it’s best to space out treatments to maintain hair health and the benefits of the treatment,” says Adashev.
