How to Style Your Skinny Jeans for Fall 2024

by

In the world of fashion, few pieces of clothing have garnered as much hostility as the skinny jean. While certain crowds (read: millennials) have held a white-knuckled grip onto them, social media took to tearing them down to a wear-under-no-circumstances item over the past five years. But whether you like it or not, the rumors are true: skinny jeans are back.

If you’re an anti-skinnies person, fear not: While skinny jeans are indeed back, they’re being styled in much chicer ways than we wore them in the late aughts. Super-skinny styles paraded down runways as the antithesis to the capacious styles that we’ve become accustomed to as of late. After years of puddled hemlines and ultra-baggy jeans, Miu Miu and Balenciaga’s fall 2024 collections’ skin-tight jeans felt like a bit of a reprieve.

Whether you never stopped wearing your skinnies or are looking to be convinced to wriggle back into your most form-fitting jeans, here’s how to style your skinny jeans for fall 2024.

As a No-Pants Look

One of the best parts of styling skinny jeans is that they can provide a juxtaposition to a more voluminous top, which is something we’ve been lacking with baggier styles. This denim-on-denim look’s focal point is the oversized, belted jacket, and when paired with skinny jeans in a similar shade of blue, it’ll give a no-pants effect that’s a perfect segue back into skinnies.

Tucked into Knee-High Boots

I’ll be the first to admit that some Y2K trends should be punishable by law—chunky highlights, velour tracksuits—but I am eternally grateful to our younger selves for showing us the power of tucking skinny jeans into knee-high boots. I recently tucked my favorite slim-fit jeans into my Staud Wally Boots, and it ended up being one of my favorite looks I’ve worn this year. A little advice? Pull a pair of long socks over your jeans to prevent excess bunching when slipping into your boots, and know that it’s OK if the line between your jeans and your boots isn’t seamless. After all, this is 2024, not 2004.

Embrace the Return of Bohomania

Skinny jeans aren’t the only early aughts’ staple making waves this fall. Be it a suede shoulder bag or a wooden pair of clogs, there’s a little bit of boho for everyone this season. While it may be another trend from our past that brings a bit of apprehension, this season’s boho pieces feel more mature and pared back—and the voluminous, statement-making blouses the trend is bringing happen to pair perfectly with skinny jeans.

Styled With Kitten Heels

Since we’re currently experiencing a shortage of peplum tops and infinity scarves, I feel pretty confident that fall 2024’s version of skinnies feel a bit more modern. I personally love the leg-lengthening effect a pair of pointed kitten heels adds when paired with body-hugging skinny jeans. To make the look feel extra seamless, opt for a pair of dark-wash or black skinnies, and complete the look with a jacket with a hem that hits at the top of your thighs.

With Mismatched Accessories

Coat | Turtleneck (Plus) | Jeans (Plus) | Belt | Shoulder Bag | Earrings | Boots

While I am saying you can pair your skinny jeans with your ankle boots, let me remind you that there are a few places this look should be updated in order to not feel dated. Instead of stuffing full-length skinnies into your boots, opt for an ankle-length pair that will hit just underneath the top of the bootie (no gap of skin, please!). To keep the proportions balanced, opt for a chunky knit on top, as well as an oversized wool coat. Finish off the look with mismatched accessories to cool the entire outfit up a bit.
