If your wardrobe is also starting to feel a bit tired, you’re in luck: The best fall 2024 fashion trends are essentially a reset button for our closets. So what will we wear this season? Boho is back in the conversation after a stellar Chloé show that made fringe, faux fur. And wedge heels look better than ever. Preppy, heritage-inspired style—a cousin to boho—is also very much in, with brands like Burberry, Schiaparelli, and Miu Miu showing plaid coats and sharp blazers. Along these lines, a key denim trend is all jeans-outfits which are everywhere right now. We spotted countless iterations at New York Fashion Week.

Fresh from autumn’s best catwalks, these are the fall 2024 fashion trends our style editors are most excited to wear this season and beyond. Our only advice? Invest now—before the rest of the world catches up.

1. Country house chic

Fashion Trends

Fall’s most alluring trend is a confluence of plaids, relaxed layers, and long skirts. It’s dressing as though you decamp to a country house, preferably one in the English countryside, every autumn. Expect traditional markers of heritage style—waxed jackets, checked coats, full skirts, knee-high wellies—to reign supreme this fall, especially on days when rain is in the forecast.

2. Boho 3.0

Fashion Trends
Welcome back to the zeitgeist, shabby chic! While the word boho might send you on a stress-induced mental trip back to 2014, fear not: The aesthetic’s third coming has been remixed for 2024, with new takes on crochet, fringe, and flowy fabrics that feel fresher than ever before. Chloé’s standout fall-winter runway provided the main blueprint for the modern take on the look (we’re still dreaming of the wedgesfront-row guests were given to wear), but Louis Vuitton, Isabel Marant, and Etro are on the same wave. Sienna Miller and Rachel Zoe would approve of these relaxed, worldly pieces in retro florals, rich suede, and faded denim.

3. Denim on denim

The Canadian tuxedo has been the subject of some ridicule, but fashion insiders agree: This is the season of the full denim look. At labels like Schiaparelli, Moschino, and Skall Studio, blue jean ensembles walked the fall runways; at the most recent New York Fashion week, meanwhile, we spotted countless showgoers rocking similar looks in tonal and mismatched denim. These sets, including Western-inspired shirts and trendy long skirts, are a perfect place to start as cooler weather settles in.

4. Riding boots

With all due respect to shorter and slouchier footwear (which, for the record, we’re still wearing), tall, structured riding boots are set to become the go-to silhouette of the months ahead. The knee-high shoes lend an equestrian grace and help anchor flowy fall dresses, newly trendy skinny jeans, and just about anything else in your autumn capsule. Dip your toes into the look (literally) with a crewneck cardi, a midi-skirt, and one of these pairs.

5. Dark cherry accessories

Fashion Trends
Designer labels found near-universal consensus on one color this season: burgundy, especially for accessories. Bags, shoes, and pretty much everything else popped up in dark cherry, oxblood, and claret, meaning anything in the family is a sound investment right now. Go with a Coach bag straight from the runway, sleek leather gloves, or Gucci-esque boots from Reformation.

6. Studs, studs, studs

Hey, stud. Thanks to boho’s big resurgence, studs are also back in the spotlight—and more prominently than ever. Studs graced bags, belts, boots, and jackets on runways by Loewe and Chloé; now, the hardware is even more inescapable. Clare V.’s studded crescent bag is one of the most coveted pieces of the season (and close to selling out for good), while J.Crew jeans, Free People belts, and Steve Madden boots offer a way into the trend that’s a little less intense.

7. Prep school

Preps are so back. This trend is directly tied to Miu Miu’s string of hyperpopular runways culminating in this fall’s collection, which featured models seemingly playing dress-up in their mothers’ ultrapreppy clothes. Full skirts, button-down shirts, leather loafers, sharp blazers, and V-neck sweaters popped up everywhere from Tommy Hilfiger to Victoria Beckham; color palettes largely leaned academic in navy, khaki, burgundy, and gray. The formula is simple: Throw a jacket over a collared shirt, and pair it with relaxed bottoms in the form of jeans or a skirt. (Your school uniform wishes it could have been that cool.)

8. Chunky loafers

Fashion Trends
After a few seasons in the fashion doghouse, brands like Gucci and Victoria Beckham are going big on stacked loafers for fall. And along with those chunky soles, exaggerated hardware, tassels, and prints are also back en vogue—so don’t be afraid to go wild. We suggest going a little more low-key with the rest of your outfit (say, a trench coat and straight-leg jeans) to let the shoes do all the talking.

9. Leopard print

Mob-wife winter has evolved; welcome to leopard-print fall. So many of our favorite designers, including boho darling Isabel Marant and prim and proper Dior, showed the divisive print for fall. We have also noticed a huge number of style insiders rocking the print during September’s Fashion Month, meaning the trend clearly has legs. Go for a full animal-print look with a matching dress and jacket—or add subtler pops like Damson Madder’s super-popular leopard jeans or Steve Madden’s foldover sneakers.

10. Butter yellow

Fashion Trends
We called it back in February: Butter yellow is the color of the year. The unexpected neutral is pretty much the perfect shade, considering you can pair it with anything—black, white, navy, denim blue, pink—and should please both color lovers and monochromatic dressers. While plenty of designers showed full tonal looks (we’re particularly into Gucci’s buttery suit and JW Anderson’s sculptural sweaterdress), you don’t need to go all-in to experiment with the color. Sprinkle a creamy sweater or bag into your transitional wardrobe.

11. T-bar shoes

Mary Janes have been popular all year, but we noticed that they’re evolving for fall; T-bar shoes, which feature an extra strap connecting the toe to the cross strap, are poised to take over as one of fall’s biggest shoe trends after featuring heavily at Miu Miu, Ferragamo, and Dries Van Noten. (Everyone from Katie Holmes to Justin Bieber is on board, by the way.) The retro, academic style fits in nicely with the ongoing preppy revival we mentioned above, and it looks great solo or alongside colored tights. Stay on trend by updating your loafers, ballet flats, and event heels with T-bar detailing.

12. Fur for all

Pretty much everyone—Prada, Burberry, Erdem, Eckhaus Latta, Proenza Schouler, Balmain, Loewe, you name it—showed some form of faux fur this season. Our advice? Invest in the best new pieces now before they disappear. Maje and Mango offer a cropped fall jacket silhouette that’s especially trendy right now; take the material in a different direction with a designer bag or a pair of shoes. (Furry footwear popped up at Versace, Acne Studios, and Ferragamo, by the way.)

13. Ties

Few accessories have dominated Fashion Month as much as neckties. Once a symbol of structure and conformity, ties now signal a playful subversiveness that feels now. While we still suggest wearing them with button-down shirts, you don’t need to stick to wearing them with full menswear looks à la Schiaparelli. Dress them down with wide-leg jeans and heels or full skirts and ballet flats. (And don’t be bashful—we also had to look up how to tie a tie.) Start with classic black and then buy into any other designs that speak to you.

14. Glove flats

While busier ballet flats are still very much in the mix, designers and style influencers have been influenced by perhaps the simplest silhouette of all: the glove flat. Free from straps, bows, and other embellishments, these shoes aren’t meant to shock—but they can still define an outfit. Take a swing on simple mesh flats like Bottega Veneta before it gets too chilly, add contrasting footwear for a pop of color à la Marni, or go for a completely tonal ensemble like Bevza. You’ll look effortlessly chic in every scenario.
